On April 28, 2023, a group of Pinkard Construction employees volunteered for Food for Thought Denver, a nonprofit organization that provides food to children in need. The volunteers helped pack and deliver bags of food to schools across Denver as part of Pinkard's Pink Crew initiative.
Pink Crew is a program that encourages Pinkard employees to give back to their communities through volunteer work. Pinkard provides 16 hours of Volunteer Time Off (VTO) per year to each employee, which can be used for any charitable cause they choose. Pink Crew also organizes group events throughout the year, such as the Food for Thought Denver project.
Food for Thought Denver aims to eliminate weekend hunger for children who rely on free or reduced lunch programs at school. Every Friday, the organization delivers bags of non-perishable food items to schools, where they are discreetly distributed to students in need. Each bag contains enough food for two breakfasts and two lunches.
According to Food for Thought Denver's website, one in four children in Denver experiences hunger on a regular basis. The organization serves over 10,000 children every week with the help of hundreds of volunteers and donors.
Pinkard employees who participated in the volunteer event said they enjoyed the experience and felt proud to support a worthy cause.
"It was a great opportunity to work together as a team and make a difference in our community," said Kristen Rebmann, a Payroll/Staff Accountant at Pinkard. "We packed over 2,000 bags of food in less than two hours. It was amazing to see how much we could accomplish with a little bit of effort and coordination."
"I was impressed by the organization and efficiency of Food for Thought Denver," said Jesus Valenzuela, an Assistant Superintendent at Pinkard. "They have a system that allows them to pack and deliver thousands of bags every week, with minimal waste and cost. They are truly making an impact on the lives of these kids."
