Pinkard Construction, Denver Housing Authority, and Parikh Stevens Architects were presented with the Associated Builders and Contractors National Excellence in Construction®(EIC) Eagle Award for their work on Vida at Sloan’s Lake affordable senior housing project. Pinkard is the only general contractor in the ABC Rocky Mountain chapter to receive the honor.
The EIC awards program is the industry’s leading competition that honors both general and specialty contractors for world-class, safe and innovative construction projects. The award was presented during ABC Convention 2021 in Grapevine, Texas, on March 10.
The $42.9 million, 200,000-sf project is a new, ground-up mixed-use senior/disabled housing development on West Colfax Avenue. The project includes 176 units for low-income seniors and disabled residents. Pinkard also completed tenant improvements for a neighborhood health clinic, a dialysis center, and an adult activity center at street level.
“For more than 30 years, ABC has honored award-winning construction projects like Vida at Sloan’s Lake because the work by the team at Pinkard exemplifies excellence in our industry,” said 2021 ABC National Chair of the Board of Directors Steve Klessig, vice president of architecture and engineering, Keller Inc., Kaukauna, Wisconsin. “This world-class construction project is a vital part of our economic engine, built safely, on time and under budget, and it is an honor to congratulate Pinkard for their commitment to setting the standard for excellence in construction.”
The project faced a variety of challenges and unforeseen conditions that included soil/dewatering issues and permitting and utilities coordination. According to Tony Burke, president, Pinkard utilized industry-leading technology and close attention to resource allocation to mitigate these issues and complete the project on time.
“We really looked at sequencing, tower crane availability, and material deliveries to ensure the schedule and budget were met,” said Burke. “Our team mandated the use of a scheduling/sequencing app for every foreman with every subcontractor on the jobsite. Special training was held to educate these team members on the app’s purpose and use of the software.”
"As our creative partners from pre-development through construction, Pinkard displayed remarkable ingenuity and innovation to overcome challenges not typically seen with a new ground-up mixed-use project,” said Chris Spelke, Senior Development Program Manager for Denver Housing Authority. “They had the foresight and directive to solve conflicts before they became larger issues, really managing the entire team to make effective decisions to make this project an overwhelming success!”
This award marks Pinkard’s 20th first-place National Excellence in Construction Eagle Award. Vida at Sloan’s Lake is one of over 100 multi-family projects and the company’s 50th affordable housing complex.
