- Pinkard Names New Chief Business Development Officer
Pinkard Names New Chief Business Development Officer 2022-06-03 Share Share Pinkard Construction names Jose Amaya as its New Chief Business Development Officer. Amaya, an experienced construction professional with over 35 years of experience, will push the company into additional markets while maintaining controlled growth. "I see enormous potential in Pinkard for markets like healthcare, mission-critical, life science, and aerospace, to name a few," said Amaya. " I hope that we can branch out while still maintaining the same level of construction quality, safety, and client intimacy." Amaya said Pinkard's homegrown history and deep roots in the community are significant differentiators in this crowded construction market. "A company celebrating its 60th anniversary in a market where some of the largest general contractors in the country are competing for work means they offer something the big guys cannot," he explains. "I want to help them scale their business in a way that preserves that client experience." Amaya has served in executive-level business development roles at companies like JE Dunn Construction, Cumming Corporation, and, most recently, Select Building Group Commercial. He has been identifying opportunities and building relationships with Colorado Owners, Developers, General Contractors, and Architectural/Engineering firms for the last 25 years. Tony Burke, President of Pinkard Construction, says that now that the company is completing projects valued in the $100 million range, they are excited to bring their unique capabilities to new markets. He adds that the person representing them must be the perfect mix of Pinkard's past and future. "The diversity of [Jose's] experience is important to why we hired him," said Burke. "The fact that he started his career on the operations side and his work growing small businesses and minority contractors is an excellent fit for Pinkard's culture." Amaya will work closely with Burke and the rest of Pinkard's executive leadership team to formalize a strategy that focuses on client retention and acquisition throughout the Colorado Front Range. - Pinkard Raises Over $92,000 For ACE, Funds 37 Scholarships
The fourth annual Careers in Construction Golf Tournament was held at The Country Club at Castle Pines. The scholarships allow the recipients to attend the private K-12 school of their choice. Pinkard Raises Over $92,000 For ACE, Funds 37 Scholarships 2023-07-06 Share Share Pinkard Construction, a general contractor serving Colorado for over 60 years, held the fourth annual Careers in Construction Golf Tournament at The Country Club at Castle Pines and raised over $92,000. The resulting 37 scholarships allow the recipients to attend the private K-12 school of their choice. Pinkard President, Tony Burke, says he sees an opportunity to nurture the next generation of the Colorado workforce and hopes that these scholarships provide enhanced access to private education for more Colorado students. Above: The first place Foursome, sponsored by IMA Corporation: Brad Johnson, Nick Burns, Bryan Young, and Jeff Walls. “19 Colorado companies and individuals provided generous sponsorships that made the tournament such a success,” said Burke. “The construction industry is facing an unprecedented labor shortage, and we hope that these scholarships allow students to pursue a rewarding career in construction.” Erik Billinger, Western Region President for ACE Colorado, said that ACE Scholarships is proud to be the beneficiary of Pinkard’s 4th Annual Careers in Construction Golf Tournament. “By supporting the tournament, Pinkard Construction and all participating sponsors are providing hope and a bright future for students and our community,” said Billinger. “Our founders believed that success was possible, regardless of income, and that all children deserve equal access to quality education. And for 23 years, we have been working to fulfill that vision. By providing partial tuition scholarships for lower-income students to attend the K-12 private school of their choice, ACE scholars are graduating high school, prepared for college and a fulfilling career.” Jayce Wynn, an ACE Scholarship alumnus, attended the tournament and spoke about how the program allowed him to broaden his education and eventually secure a full-ride scholarship to CU Boulder, where he is currently studying Biomedical Engineering. “I come from a single-parent household with three older brothers,” said Wynn. “Without ACE and sponsors like Pinkard, none of this would be possible. My mom worked very hard but putting 4 children though a private education on an hourly salary is virtually impossible.” Those wishing to support ACE scholarships can visit www.acescholarships.org . - The Problem with Wood Framing and How to Solve It
The problem is simple, if not easy, to fix: someone must take ownership of the wood framing process. The Problem with Wood Framing and How to Solve It 2023-12-20 Share Share This article originally appeared in the December 2023 Issue of Building Dialogue Wood framing is one of the riskiest scopes in construction. The fact that remarkably few wood framing Subcontractors can be bonded is proof of this. Even if they could, the problems that can result from poorly managed framing - including schedule and quality issues that cascade into other trades – can't really be fixed with a bonding Band-Aid. The good news is that the problem is simple, if not easy, to fix: someone must take ownership of the wood framing process. Many entities have a piece of the puzzle, leading to this lack of ownership. One glaring example is truss design. Structural Engineers (who do not have truss software) rely on general design principles to complete framing plans. Truss company's bids are based on these plans and will bid them as drawn, right or wrong. They have no incentive other than winning the job. In addition, these companies generally do not evaluate the project holistically: meeting architectural intent with MEP, structural steel integration, etc. Eventually, problematic designs are passed to the Framing Subcontractor, whose only incentive is to finish fast and collect a check. When problems are caught, redesign can take weeks. This puts the whole project on hold if it’s early enough and leads to costly rework and associated delays if construction is underway. To address these issues, a thorough preconstruction process is crucial. The first key to success is involving a General Contractor with in-depth framing knowledge and their key suppliers, especially truss fabricators, with the design team. This collaboration results in framing designs that meet architectural and structural intent, ensure constructability and seamless integration with other trades. The result is a project that can be built in budget, faster, and with simplicity that improves quality before construction starts. A critical aspect of this is cultivating relationships with vendors and holding them to project specifications. This approach ensures quality and saves owners money – and not in a nebulous “preventing future issues” way. There are myriad efficiencies that can be built into the project at this stage. Pinkard’s recent efforts on Krisana Affordable Housing created a framing design that saved the Owner over $250,000. Once the project is set up for success, experienced and attentive on-site supervision is crucial. A dedicated framing professional who leads the Framing Subcontractor and interfaces directly with the project superintendent can catch minor issues before they become major problems. This level of supervision ensures the project stays on track and all team members are held accountable for their work. Additionally, it allows for open communication between all parties involved and leads to a smoother and more efficient construction process. On-site framing supervisors must have the knowledge and authority to make quick decisions and adjustments, saving time and money. Properly implemented, these strategies can be incredibly successful. Pinkard’s recent preconstruction efforts for Boulder County Housing Authority on Willoughby Corner – a multi-phased affordable community in Lafayette with 174 units in the first phase – illustrates this well. The initial design was a unique, modern design that required complex engineering. When Pinkard took the time and worked with the design team to understand the factors driving the design decisions, we developed solutions without sacrificing the overall look of the building. Having a team who not only understands the wood framing process start to finish but also takes ownership and responsibility for its success is essential for ensuring that your wood frame project is delivered smoothly on schedule, competitively priced and is a quality build that will last you decades. - World Mental Health Day 2024
In observance of World Mental Health Day, please take a moment and to check in with yourself, your friends, your coworkers, and your loved ones. World Mental Health Day 2024 2024-10-10 Share Share In observance of World Mental Health Day, please take a moment and to check in with yourself, your friends, your coworkers, and your loved ones. In recent years, Pinkard has made mental health a core tenant of how we address employee wellness and job safety. In addition to various mental health resources provided through Cigna Behavioral Health , our employee benefits include 5 free counseling sessions through Magellan EAP and a virtual support program for dealing with stress and substance issues via Youturn Health . Our weekly on-site safety talks include ongoing conversations on mental health topics. And in every single porta-john on Pinkard jobsites, we place a sticker with the words “YOU MATTER” in English and Spanish, plus a QR code leading to the “988” national Crisis Lifeline. We also hold an annual employee cornhole tournament supporting mental health. As a sign of progress, Pinkard was recently certified as a “Blue Badge” Healthy Workplace by Health Links , earning the highest mental health resources score of any contractor in Colorado, but that doesn't mean our work is anywhere near done. As we've learned, one of the biggest challenges is the stigma around discussing mental health, so it's on all of us to break that stigma down and make it okay to ask for help, which we all need at various points in our lives. For further reading, check out our recent series on Men's Mental Health Month, featuring powerful conversations with Safety Manager Dave Ruddy , HR Director Jeff Kessler , and former EMT Bryce Heitsmith . - Pinkard Works to Remove Barriers for Women in Construction
Pinkard is dedicated to supporting women in the construction industry through educational resources, flexibility, and mentorship opportunities to help women achieve their career aspirations. Pinkard Works to Remove Barriers for Women in Construction 2023-03-06 Share Share Pinkard is proud to be a part of Women in Construction Week 2023. Pinkard understands that women have faced obstacles in the construction industry and is committed to helping them achieve their career aspirations in this field. Pinkard is focused on providing women with access to educational resources, flexibility, and mentorship opportunities. And this is not just for its employees but clients as well. "I think it is really about flexibility," says Christina Call, Prequalification Coordinator. "One of the barriers I see for women is that we also take on a lot of the responsibility to raise our kids and keep our family life going." Call says that she feels Pinkard's leadership allows her the flexibility to balance supporting Pinkard and her family. She thinks that a rigid 9-5 schedule isn't realistic, especially given the new status quo of remote work. "I set an in-office schedule that I stick to, but the ability to remote work has made it possible for me to pursue a career in construction," says Call. For project engineer Dallas Frisbie, her work in the field is all about showing up and getting the job done. She says that Pinkard's leadership is doing the heavy lifting to ensure that traditionally all-male environments are open and welcoming. "I have experienced my fair share of uncomfortable experiences in my career. However, Pinkard's team works hard to make sure anyone feels comfortable," says Frisbie. "At the end of the day, I don't want to be the one policing everyone. Pinkard has already set the standard for appropriate behavior." Frisbie says that women must also have access to mentorship to learn and grow. She says her experience at Pinkard has been tremendous and is eager to offer mentorship. "When I was studying at the School of Mines, there wasn't a lot of other women pursuing this career with me," she said. "At Pinkard, I am so excited to have access to not just other Superintendents and project managers who are open and collaborative but also to Odette Bent-Buckles, our CFO." Frisbie says that as she grows in this field, her priority is to continue to mentor other women who want to break into construction, especially in the field. "The biggest misconception about this industry is that field jobs are not for women. I want to work to change that stereotype," she says. "Pinkard has proven to be the perfect place for that because this desire to change and grow is cultural. They make everyone feel like they belong." Pinkard’s focus is on more than just its employees and includes the client experience for its growing number of female clients in development and facilities roles. Molly Chiang, a senior housing developer with Boulder County Housing Authority (BCHA), says that her experience with Pinkard differs significantly from others in her career. "Pinkard's team has always been extremely respectful, and I don't know, just treats us like peers and colleagues," says Chiang. "I have been in rooms where that is not the case." "Walking onto a construction site as a woman, if I was like, 'I don't know what a glu-lam is,' I never felt stupid asking questions," said Lauren Cely, Senior Housing Developer for BCHA. "I remember standing in the garage shell, talking with your team about what's better: cast in place or precast, and we were going through the pros and cons, thinking about future projects, and I loved it." Pinkard's commitment to helping women succeed in this field is evident in our ongoing efforts to provide women with the tools and resources they need to pursue a successful and fulfilling career in construction. Pinkard is thrilled to be celebrating Women in Construction Week and is excited to see the positive impact these initiatives have on the lives and careers of women in the industry.
